WaterCan Announces Bridgehead coffeehouses launch "WaterCan Blend"

OTTAWA - October 16, 2007
Bridgehead Coffeehouses, Ottawa-based retailer of fairly-traded, organic and shade-grown coffees from small-scale farmers, supports WaterCan's project work in Africa by launching the "WaterCan Blend". Two dollars from every pound sold of this Ethiopian coffee will be directed to a community-based project in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, where all of Bridgehead's African coffees are grown. Through this new partnership, Bridgehead customers will help provide access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education to still more needy children and their families in Africa.

About the "WaterCan Blend"

This Limited Edition blend was created to celebrate the beautiful fruit and floral notes of Ethiopian coffees. It is a delicate, medium dark roast that combines Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harrar coffees. Helping to bring clean water to communities in Oromia is one more reason to enjoy this wonderful blend.

When customers purchase WaterCan Blend, Bridgehead will donate $2 per pound to WaterCan.

The blend is currently available for purchase at
Bridgehead Coffeehouses city-wide and in the online store at www.bridgehead.ca

About the Recipient Community in Ethiopia

Bridgehead's funding of this critical community-based project will eliminate the need for residents to travel long distances each day to collect clean water, or expose themselves to preventable diseases through the consumption of water from contaminated sources. The project, part of the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) for the Rural Poor initiative, will benefit approximately 2,000 people. It will include the construction of: 4 borehole wells with handpumps, each accompanied by a community laundry wash basin and a community bath stall; the promotion of household pit latrines; and a community-based education and training program to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the new water and sanitation facilities.
