Description:

Water is essential for sustaining life on Earth. The amount of water on the planet remains constant, but all of it is constantly being cycled between the atmosphere, the ocean and land. In this activity, students will examine the water cycle and its impact on human water supplies.

Materials:

Teaching strategies

  1. (optional) If students need a review of the relevant vocabulary words for the water cycle, the definitions and words can be written randomly on the board and students can conduct a matching activity.
  2. The Water Cycle
    • Provide the handout titled "The Water Cycle" to students and have them read the information in groups. Once complete, students will pictorally represent the information on large piece of poster paper.
    • The posters can be explained to the class and hung in the classroom.
    • Pose the following question to the groups and discuss: How does the water cycle impact human water supply locally and globally?
      • student response could revolve around failure of crops, success of crops (2003 will be a great growing season for cucumbers!), forest fires, ...

ground water: water found below the surface of the Earth

infiltration: process by which water seep into the soil

precipitation: when water falls to the earth (rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog)

transpiration: the evaporation of water from plant leaves

water table: the level of underground earth which is saturated with water
