Grade 8 2.5: Different Bodies of Water

Timing: 2 x 75 minute periods

Activity type: Research

Description:

The world map is filled with names of oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, canals etc., but few students could differentiate the types of bodies of water. Through research, students will define and distinguish the bodies of water, identify facts about the bodies of water and examine the significance of the distribution of water on the planet.

Teaching strategies

  1. In groups, have students select a body of water to research:
    • Ocean
    • Lake
    • Reservoir
    • Canals
    • River
    • Stream
    • Ice caps/glaciers
    • Seas
  2. Distribute the handout "Your body of water" and explain the project with students.
  3. Students will research their bodies of water on the Internet.
    • Students will present their information in the form of a brochure or fact sheet to be shared with their classmates either orally (quick 5 minute presentations) or by posting it in the classroom.
  4. Using the Can you tell the difference? worksheet, students can conduct a "gallery walk" of the brochures in order to answer the question or record the information from presentation (depending on the option chosen in Step 4)

Extension

Student work could be displayed on coloured bristol board. Bodies of water could be colour coded on the world map according to the group's bristol board colour. For example, the Pacific Ocean group has orange bristol board and the ocean is coloured accordingly on the map.
