Kenya Program
Kenya Project Spotlight: Nairobi Slums, Central Kenya
Over half of Nairobi 's 2.5 million residents live in slums where water and sanitation conditions are atrocious. During the rainy season, a sudden downpour can transform narrow laneways into muddy streams, and low-lying homes are flooded with dirty disease-ridden water. Not surprisingly, outbreaks of diseases like cholera and typhoid are common occurrences. Working with local partners like KWAHO, WaterCan is constructing water systems and sanitation facilities to improve the quality of life of slum residents. In Kibera, Nairobi 's biggest slum, WaterCan has developed large water storage tanks with taps that are connected to the main municipal water system. The facilities are operated and maintained by trained local community groups to ensure long-term sustainability. Today, more than 1,000 slum residents can obtain safe drinking water at a cheaper price. This especially benefits the poorest households who previously spent 50% or more of their income just to meet this basic need.
