Tanzania Project Spotlight: Dar es Salaam Slums, Eastern Tanzania
Gongo la Mboto is a slum area located on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam , one of the fastest growing cities in Africa . WaterCan is working in partnership with WEPMO to improve local residents' access to clean drinking water. Previously, residents were forced to obtain water from polluted open wells, or purchase containers from roving handcart vendors who charge high prices, especially during drought periods. The development of a new water system means that the 2,500 residents of Gongo la Mboto now have improved access to a more affordable source of safe drinking water. The project also involved the construction of ecological sanitation or ‘ecosan' toilets which do not require the digging of a hole – an important feature given the high water table in the area.
