7: Environmental Considerations In designing project activities, it is necessary to give careful consideration to any potential negative effects on the biophysical and socioeconomic environment. The development of safe water supplies will generally involve the digging or drilling of wells, the protection of natural springs, and the construction of rainwater tanks of varying holding capacities. The development of sanitation facilities will typically involve the construction of structures such as individual or institutional Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines, traditional or improved pit latrines, and refuse disposal pits. The proper siting and management of these facilities will be necessary to minimize the risk of surface and subsurface groundwater contamination. To ensure that planned project activities will not result in
any significant negative environmental effects, WaterCan will require overseas
partners to prepare an Environmental Assessment Report for relevant project
activities. Once the overseas partner has prepared and submitted a satisfactory
Environmental Assessment Report, the construction of planned water supply and
sanitation facilities will be permitted to proceed. |
