WaterCan's
Program Director Visits Projects in Africa
by George Yap, Program Director
In May 2002, I travelled
to Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Uganda to monitor and evaluate the progress
of several water and sanitation projects supported by WaterCan.
In Uganda, I travelled
with staff from our local partner CPAR-Uganda to Apac District, a four-hour
drive north of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. In Apac District, we
visited various sites of the Safe Water and Sanitation for Aber
and Iceme Subcounties Project, and met with community leaders and
local government officials. Travelling in our sturdy Toyota Land Cruiser
over rough red dirt roads bordered by tall grasses and shrubs, we arrived
at Adokoboi Village in Aloni Parish, where the Kulo Atigo 12
metre-deep well fitted with a “U3” hand-pump serves more
than 400 people. Several villagers told me that since they began drinking
from the well, they noticed that the number of health problems such
as stomach-aches had diminished, especially among the children. At Micilin
Village in Aloni Parish, the Omara Apai protected spring serves
more than 2,000 people. Although there are long line-ups to collect
water from the spring, these people need no longer to use water from
polluted springs and streams. top |
