Uganda Project Spotlight: Wakiso District, Central Uganda
Wakiso is a green, fertile rural area located in Central Uganda where most villagers get their drinking water from polluted streams, unprotected natural springs and traditional wells. The situation is made worse by the general lack of sanitation facilities and availability of basic information on good hygiene practices. Not surprisingly, water and sanitation related diseases such as diarrhoea, intestinal parasites, and skin and eye infections place a heavy health burden on local villagers. Working with VAD, a local partner, WaterCan is bringing clean water to Wakiso's residents by protecting natural springs and installing shallow wells that are fitted with sturdy hand-pumps.
