WaterCan/EauVive turns 20!

We at WaterCan are thrilled to announce the 20th anniversary of WaterCan’s founding as a charitable organization dedicated to helping citizens of developing countries gain access to clean water and better health.  This milestone provides us with an excellent opportunity to both reflect on the past and look to the future.

Our goals for this important year include celebrating our accomplishments, recognizing key contributions to our development, enhancing and expanding our existing programs, growing the WaterCan family of donors and raising awareness of our mission across the country.

While doing so, however, it is exceedingly important for us to keep administration expenses at an appropriate level; one that both maximizes our growth as a fundraising body and allows us to provide as many people as possible with clean water and proper sanitation.  For this reason, we are focusing on expanding existing programs across the country.

  • We will work to add new chapters to our university, and school programs, and boost participation in the Water for Life campaign.
  • We will also host another Angela Hewitt Benefit Concert, but this time the event will be held in Calgary in order to engage individuals, groups, and corporations in a new region of the country.
  • In addition, we are also re-releasing our public service announcement to media outlets across Canada.

While focusing much of our attention on enhancing these existing programs and events, we have also launched a new initiative that will help us to accomplish several of the goals outlined for the 20th anniversary.

  • The WaterCan Walk for Water encourages Canadians to walk and raise funds to help provide people in eastern Africa with clean water, sanitation facilities and better health.  Taking place in communities across Canada; universities, schools, businesses, community and faith-based groups will organize events of all sizes, and become part of the network of Canadians who care and are taking action.

The WaterCan Walk for Water accomplishes several important goals.  It provides an opportunity for external groups to get involved in the work of WaterCan by raising both funds for and awareness of WaterCan.   This initiative can suit a variety of event sizes, from a handful of people to hundreds of participants.  Moreover, the Walk for Water provides a setting where important learning opportunities can be created for participants.  For example, the route will have a symbolic connection to the average distance that women and girls have to travel each day to fetch clean water.

As we celebrate our accomplishments of the last 20 years by engaging our alumni, volunteers, and long-time supporters and stakeholders.

  • We will produce a history of WaterCan’s and a timeline to bring attention to our evolution as an organization, our solid track record, and the people who made it all happen.
  • A series of awards will be launched to recognize such contributions to both the field of clean water and sanitation and to WaterCan.
  • Finally, we will hold a 20th anniversary celebration for all WaterCan staff, board members, volunteers, and alumni at the 2007 Annual General Meeting.

Of paramount importance in this 20th anniversary year is the expansion of our vital work in Africa. With the generous support provided by the Government of Canada, our family of donors and corporate sponsors, we are working to make this happen.

You can help make our 20th anniversary one to remember - by donating, volunteering or simply spreading the word about WaterCan and our vision of “Clean Water for All!”

Sincerely,

Gary H.J. Pluim,
Executive Director
