Trudeau Exhibition Raises Money for WaterCan

Trudeau: Images of Canada's Passionate Statesman on display at the IX Gallery in Toronto from September 23rd to October 16th marks the ten year anniversary of his passing and features over 40 historic images from the archives of the Canadian Press. 10% of the exhibit proceeds will be donated to WaterCan. Images retain for $600 to $850. Find out more!

Turning Canoe Paddle Art Work into Clean Water for Africa

The Artists in their Environment studio tour will be transforming canoe paddles into one-of-a-kind works of art with 100% of sales proceeds being donated to WaterCan. The "Freshwater Paddles" exhibit will become a stop along the Chelsea-Wakefield studio tour which sees many hundreds of visitors every year. A media preview of the exhibit will take place on October 1st attended by all of the artists, and WaterCan’s Leslie Moreland and Gary Pluim.

The tour takes place during the first two weekends of October(2nd-3rd and 9th-11th) from 10am-5pm. Find out more!

School by School Challenge Met in Record Time

Two short months after announcing the 2010-2011 School by School Fundraising Challenge, students across Canada and the United States have already reached and exceeded the $20,644 goal! Congratulations on this unprecedented effort! Your selfless actions will help to bring the miracle of clean, safe drinking water to 1,680 children, women and men in the rural Bachoo District of Ethiopia. Find out more!

Aveda Canada Earth Month Campaign meets goal to support clean water for Africa

The Collega International Aveda network in Canada celebrated Earth Day, April 22, this year with their fourth annual Walk for Water with a total of 1,800 registered walkers participating in events hosted in 15 Canadian cities raising awareness, and much needed funds. The effort raised $325,000 for Aveda’s exclusive Canadian Earth Month partner, WaterCan, bringing Aveda’s contribution to the charity to $881,256 since 2008. Find out more!

16th Annual Embassy Dinner a Great Success

With the generous support of presenting sponsor Golder Associates, Ottawa’s diplomatic community, corporate sponsors (Robinson Consultants, Grey Horse Corporation), media sponsors (Embassy Magazine, Roger’s Television, The Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Business Journal and Capital Style Magazine), dozens of live and silent auction donors and nearly one hundred volunteers, we’re pleased to announce that this year’s dinner raised over $138,805 dollars in support of clean water projects throughout eastern Africa. WaterCan participates in call to action

WaterCan, in partnership with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, WaterAid and others join together to Raise Clean Hands for WASH in Schools. This action calls on decision-makers to increase investments, and on concerned stakeholders to plan and act in cooperation. Every child deserves to attend a school that offers safe water, healthful sanitation and hygiene education. WaterCan unveils Water for Life: An African Photo Exhibit

The Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P., Speaker of the House of Commons and Margaret Trudeau, Honourary President of WaterCan hosted a reception on Parliament Hill on March 23 to mark the official launch of Water for Life: An African Photo Exhibit featuring the work of internationally renowned photographer Peter Bregg. Water: In Focus contest winners announced

Congratulations to Natalie Wu of Toronto who has won in our senior category and Damon Fauvel of Regina who is taking the prize for the junior age group.  We received dozens of inspirational entries and thank each and every participant for taking the time to think creatively and critically about "water".   A special thanks also to the hundreds of individuals who voted for their favorite entries online, thereby showing great support for our youth participants.

Gifts of Water reaches fundraising goal

The generous and heartfelt response to WaterCan's inaugural Gifts of Water campaign this past Holiday Season was nothing short of overwhelming! Thanks to your support, we have now raised 100% of funds ($13,823) required for the Clean Water for Iraara Primary School Project. This project benefits 635 boys and girls in the rural Kyenjojo District of Uganda. Find out more!

Back to school means back to WaterCan for many students

Canadian students made an immense contribution to our work last year. In addition to raising awareness, primary and highschool students helped raise enough money ($15,000) to make the Clean Water for Kotetni Primary School project possible, while university chapters raised over $37,600 for projects in Ethiopia! With school back in session we're proud to present our new Challenges for WaterCan@Schools & WaterCan@Universities

Collega for Aveda Raises $291,170 in support of clean water projects

Collega for Aveda unveiled their Earth Month fundraising total before a packed audience at WaterCan's Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony held at City Hall in Ottawa on June 16th. Raffaela Caruso, Sr. Vice-President of Finance and Operations of the Collega group of companies gave a rousing presentation about the 2009 Earth Month Campaign. More than 1,998 walkers registered to participate in 17 walks in major cities across Canada in an effort to raise funds and awareness about the global water crisis.

 

WaterCan wishes to thank all who participated! Your efforts will help to bring clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene education to more than 11,690 people in eastern Africa!

WaterCan Fundraiser Art Show
Cool Water -a Celebration of Nature in Motion

On a lovely sunny day in May, art lovers and WaterCan supporters stayed inside to enjoy the great outdoors, gathering at the Ottawa restaurant, Prime 360, for a show of Renfrew painter Hugh Malcolm’s recent work.

 

The artist shared the proceeds from the show with two of his favourite charities, the Parkinson Society of Ottawa and WaterCan –thanks to brisk sales –raising over $1,000 for each organization. Our thanks go out to Mr. Malcolm, the coordinator and WaterCan volunteer, Carol Bell Smith and the “nature” lovers who supported this wonderful event.

Canadian Government Expands Partnership with WaterCan to bring Clean Water and Sanitation to 40,000 People in Eastern Africa

WaterCan, is pleased to announce its renewed and expanded partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The three year program, valued at 2.11 million dollars, will support community-based integrated water supply, sanitation and hygiene education programming to benefit more than 40,000 people living in rural and urban areas of Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. Additionally it will strengthen the capacity of WaterCan’s African partner organizations to plan and carry out high quality water and sanitation programming. Read more

Bravo's Star Portraits Series staring Margaret Trudeau to Benefit WaterCan

Margaret Trudeau, WaterCan's Honourary President, has chosen WaterCan to be the recipient of proceeds raised during an auction of her portraits produced for a new television series, Star Portraits, airing on Bravo! Canada, Fall 2009. The portraits will be auctioned at the Joyner/Waddingtons Canadian Fine Art Auction in December. Find out more

World Water Day

World Water Day drew a crowd of well over 100 people to Parliament Hill as staff and supporters of WaterCan and other SWAN member organization displayed over 40 signed toilet seats from across Canada. Speeches made by George Yap (WaterCan), Robert Fox (Oxfam), Kate White (UNAC) and Chris Dendys (Results) drew attention to the dire situation, while Paul Dewar, NDP MP (Ottawa Centre) and Foreign Affairs Critic accepted a signed seat promising to deliver it to Prime Minister Harper.

WaterCan to Mark World Water Day with Public Action on Parliament Hill

Join us as we deliver to Canada’s seat of power dozens of signed toilet seats.

 

The toilet seat petition campaign, “Join the Call, Toilets for All!”, was launched by SWAN Canada, of which WaterCan is a founding member, on World Toilet Day (Nov 19th, 2008) to generate public support in demanding that Canada honor its commitments to address the global water and sanitation crisis. Ottawa's Go Green Expo Gives to WaterCan in Celebration of World Water Day

In lieu of an admission fee, attendees of Ottawa's Go Green Expo, taking place March 21-22nd at Landsdowne Park in Ottawa, will be encouraged to make a voluntary donation. Event organizers are donating all proceeds to WaterCan in celebration of World Water Day. Gary H.J. Pluim, WaterCan's Executive Director is a special guest speaker at this exciting 2 day event aiming to encourage greener lifestyles. Gary will be speaking on the "Go Green Stage" at 12:34pm on Sunday, March 22nd. Find out more.
