“An evening with Angela Hewitt” – A concert to benefit WaterCan:
Helping provide families in eastern Africa with clean water and better health!
We greatly appreciate the efforts and generosity of all those involved with “An Evening with Angela Hewitt” – a concert to benefit WaterCan. The event, held on Monday, February 19th, 2007, at the prestigious Jack Singer Concert Hall, in Calgary’s EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, was a tremendous success.
Angela Hewitt offered a sublime performance, which included selections from Bach, Beethoven, Rameau and Chabrier. We sincerely thank Ms. Hewitt for her time, effort, and contribution towards our vision of “clean water for all”. We look forward to working with her again in the coming year.
We are grateful to the Mount Royal Conservatory for donating their majestic Fazioli piano for Ms. Hewitt's performance and to the EPCOR CENTRE for providing the venue free of charge. Thank you to Nexen Inc, Golder Associates and GLJ Petroleum Consultants for their corporate sponsorship of this event and to the Calgary Herald and Embassy, Canada’s Foreign Policy News Weekly for providing invaluable media sponsorship. Finally, thank you to Great Events Catering, sponsor of the post-concert reception, at which ticket holders met Ms. Hewitt, Ms. Trudeau and members of the WaterCan staff. Without the support of this great family of sponsors, this event would not have been possible.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Tracy Stewart of Pulp Inc. (http://www.pulpinc.ca/) for her amazing marketing services. She truly went above and beyond and we wholeheartedly recommend her for any of your marketing needs.
While we do not yet have the full financial details (available by the end of March.), we are beyond thrilled at the progress made towards WaterCan’s 4-year strategic goals, which include nationalizing our organization, increasing our name recognition, and growing our donor database. Advancements were made towards these goals by holding an event in another city, extensive radio and print advertising, and the sale of 625 tickets. The WaterCan booth at the reception received heavy traffic and the presentation of images of our overseas projects ensured that guests left the concert with a better understanding of WaterCan and the work that we do. Since returning to the office, we have received numerous positive emails regarding the concert and our cause, as well as several hundred dollars in additional donations.

About the concert
On Monday, February 19, 2007, world-renowned Canadian pianist Angela
Hewitt will play a concert to benefit WaterCan/EauVive. A Canadian non-
governmental organization, WaterCan is dedicated to providing clean water,
basic sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people.
Taking place in Calgary at the EPCOR Centre’s prestigious Jack Singer Concert Hall, truly one of
the most beautiful and acoustically acclaimed venues in North America, “An
Evening with Angela Hewitt”, will be one to remember.
The piano used in this performance will be a
Fazioli F308, an anonymous gift to the Mount Royal
College Conservatory in honour of the Blackstone
family. It was built by hand over eighteen months by
Fazioli Pianoforti at Sacile in Pordenone, Italy, an area
renowned for woodworking. At 3.08 m or 10’2’’, the
F308 is the largest and most rare production piano in
the world; a standard concert grand piano is nine feet long. The wood for the
sounding board, “abete rosso” or red spruce, comes from the Magnifica Communita
di Fiemme, a community forest in the Italian Alps that also supplied wood for the
famous violin makers Stradivari and the Cremona School. Seasoned maple for the
pin blocks comes from Canada. It is a lovely piano to play, with a responsive,
sensitive action and a beautiful sound.
Margaret Trudeau, WaterCan’s Honourary President
will open the evening with an address about the
importance of water and sanitation in the developing
world. Speaking from first hand experience, Ms Trudeau
will, in her relaxed and engaging style, discuss the
difference that WaterCan is making to the health and
well-being of recipient communities in eastern Africa.
A cocktail reception will follow the concert. Hosted
by Margaret Trudeau and attended by Angela Hewitt,
sponsors, WaterCan board members, staff and reception
guests will mingle, mix and enjoy an open bar and
delectable hors d’eouvres.
Goals of the concert:
- Raise funds for WaterCan’s clean water and sanitation projects
- Raise public awareness about global water issues
- Encourage Canadians to lend support to global water issues
About Angela Hewitt

© M. Yamanoue
Angela Hewitt is a phenomenal artist who has established herself at the
highest level, not least through her superb, award-winning recordings for
Hyperion. Her ten year project to record all the major keyboard works of
Bach has been described as “one of the record glories of our age” and
has won her a huge following. She has been hailed as “the pre-eminent
Bach pianist of our time” (The Guardian) and “nothing less than the
pianist who will define Bach performance on the piano for years to
come” (Stereophile).
With a vast repertoire ranging from Couperin to the contemporary, Ms.
Hewitt’s discography also includes CDs of Granados, Olivier Messiaen,
the complete solo works of Ravel and most recently, the complete
Chopin Nocturnes.
Angela Hewitt was awarded the first ever BBC Radio 3 Listener’s
Award (Royal Philharmonic Society Awards) in 2003. She was also
made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, and in 2006, was awarded
the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
Most recently, she was named the Gramaphone Artist of the year 2006.
When asked why she chose to play for WaterCan,
Ms. Hewitt’s answer was simple and profound:
“So many people in the world suffer from a shortage of clean water –
something all of us take for granted. I think of this every time I brush
my teeth. I would like to do my part to help WaterCan’s activities,
and to bring them to the attention of a wider public”.
