Sold-out Embassy Dinner a Smashing Success!

WaterCan's Tenth Annual Embassy Dinner, held on Friday, May 7 was once again an evening to remember. This was the event's third year in the historic Aberdeen Pavilion, at Ottawa 's Lansdowne Park . The dinner featured an enormous buffet, where Embassies and High Commissions representing 52 countries offered delectable delicacies from their homelands amid their national colours and décor.

The evening opened with a reception, where guests enjoyed Argentinean wines, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from Peru and Paraguay , cheeses from Switzerland and fabulous margaritas offered by Mexico . The reception set the mood for an exciting and exotic evening. A selection of Ontario wines from Hernder Estate Wines, local beer from Heritage Brewing, coffee from Timothy's World Coffee, water offered by Ice River Springs and a wonderful performance by the Governor General's Foot Guard Band added a Canadian flare to the evening.

The Silent Auction tables offered tempting items from around the globe. Many Embassies and High Commissions donated items from their countries, which participants bid on eagerly. Other donors included the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, the Royal Canadian Air Farce, the Ottawa Senators, the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, the National Gallery of Canada, and Le Cordon Bleu Paris. The auction featured donations from restaurants, golf courses, hotels, salons, publishers, galleries, theatres, retail stores, professional sports teams, museums, and several local artists.

The culinary experience was an incredible feast for the eyes and taste buds, as Embassies and High Commissions from around the globe offered delicious fare from their beautifully decorated serving tables. An impromptu parade of Embassy and High Commission representatives brought much excitement to the evening.

After dinner, WaterCan's Live Auction was staged, with bidders competing for a wide array of offerings. Dinners for up to 12 people in the Ambassador's official residence were offered by the Embassy of Sweden and by the Embassy of Egypt. Other items included a glamorous outfit from Monelle Vadier, an Inuit sculpture donated by 'The Snow Goose', rare French wine, travel packages, furniture, a gorgeous Persian rug, and two Audi A4 Turbo cars courtesy of Mark Motors of Ottawa.

A raffle draw was held during the Live Auction. The raffle prize, generously donated by the Embassy of Cuba, Sol y Son Vacations and Cubana Airlines, was a one week trip for two to Cuba . What a prize!

The funds raised at this event will help WaterCan to continue to provide clean water and sanitation in developing countries. WaterCan is grateful to all of our event sponsors, the participating missions and donors, without whom we could not hold the Embassy Dinner, as well as to the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize this fabulous event. Thank you all!
