WHY

WHY

The Canadian rock-band WHY is driven to make music with meaning. They demonstrate their commitment to global social justice through their lyrics and by donating proceeds from their album sales to international development charities such as WaterCan.

WHY’s songs, featured on their two full-length albums Lazarus Effect and RED, have received airplay on radio stations across Canada and numerous worldwide. Their feature single “RED” reached the number one spot on Canadian top 40 lists and was named song of the year by Winnipeg’s KICK FM. The follow-up single “The Surface” has experienced similar success, reaching the top five on various Canadian radio stations and receiving international airplay.

WHY first took shape in the late 90’s in Winnipeg, Manitoba under the guidance of Brian Cook (lead vocalist). As years passed and other commitments took hold, the band continued to write and began to dedicate time to charity as their musical inspirations Bono (U2) and Bob Geldof (LIVE AID and LIVE 8) have.

WHY has chosen to donate 40% of its RED CD sales to WaterCan in recognition of the vitally important work we do in east Africa and because the band shares WaterCan’s vision of building a world where every man, woman and child’s right to clean water and basic sanitation is realized.

With two successful albums under their belt, the band is presently working on their third, set to be released early in 2009.

Listen to “We Started Out (Somebodies Baby)”, a song dedicated to WaterCan from their forthcoming album.

Kim Kitchen

Kim Kitchen

Movement of water documents Kim’s front line experience in Dar es salaam, Tanzania, city of four million in the sub-Sahara in 2007.

The artist’s multi-media installation highlights the labour intensive
process of searching for and collecting water, water that is often polluted or toxic.

Kitchen’s experience in a community where gathering water is a daily priority, with deadly consequences, led her to reflect on her own relationship with water. The exhibition incorporates large photographs of Dar es salaam, juxtaposed with journal entries and plastic pails filled with locally sourced water. Kitchen also recorded
her use of water in video format to stimulate awareness about the availability of clean water.

In this project, Kim draws attention to the global issues of water consumption, protection, privatization, exploitation, governance and conservation. She uses her exhibit also to highlight the work that WaterCan is doing to mitigate the global water crisis.
