In 2001, a student from Queens University watched “Our Bleeding Hearts”, a documentary film highlighting the desperate need for clean water and sanitation in developing communities in Africa. After watching this film he shared his experience with his friends and they approached WaterCan to find out how they could participate in fundraising for the organization. Since 2001, Queen's has raised an amazing amount of money for WaterCan by holding various fundraising events, one of which – FLOAT – has become a Queens tradition that sells out in days.

In 2004, WaterCan decided to see if this model would work at other Universities, and so began the WaterCan@Universities Chapter Program. To date, we have no less than 8 active Chapters in Ontario and Quebec.
