Building Strong Foundations to Combat Global Poverty: The Case for Investing in Water and Sanitation

A Special One-Day Water and Sanitation Forum (Tuesday, October 9, 2012: 10:00am – 4:00pm) – Le Salon, National Arts Centre

The purpose of the Water and Sanitation Forum is to communicate how investments in the water and sanitation sector can enhance progress in stated priority areas of Canada’s foreign aid strategy such as maternal and child health, primary education, and sustainable economic growth. The morning session includes a moderated Experts’ Panel followed by an afternoon session that offers individual presentations on specific water and sanitation topics given by members of the Experts’ Panel and other invited speakers. Each presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with audience members.

Confirmed Experts’ Panel Participants:

  • Moderator: Lucy van Oldenbarneveld, co-host of CBC News Ottawa
  • Clarissa Brocklehurst, former Chief of Water Sanitation and Hygiene at UNICEF
  • Jim Chauvin, Director of Policy, Canadian Public Health Association and President of the World Federation of Public Health Associations
  • Jon Lane, former Executive Director of the UN’s Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council
  • Jaehyang So, Manager, Water and Sanitation Program, World Bank Group

WaterCan Awards Ceremony

(Wednesday, October 10th 2012: 6:30pm to 9:00pm) – Fountain Room, National Arts Centre

Master of Ceremonies: George Yap, Executive Director, WaterCan

The WaterCan Award will be presented to WaterCan’s past Executive Directors (1987 - 2011) in recognition of their important contributions to the establishment, evolution and growth of the organization over the past two and a half decades.

The Michael Lubbock Award will be presented to Jon Lane, former Executive Director of the UN’s Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council in recognition of his substantial contributions and leadership to the international water and sanitation field. As part of his acceptance speech, Mr. Lane will provide an invaluable overview of how the sector has evolved over the past three decades, its current challenges and opportunities, and how Canada can best contribute to global efforts aimed at improving poor people’s access to basic water and sanitation services.

Admission to both events is free, light refreshments will be served.
