Like most Canadian students and teachers you travel short distances to school and when you get there you’re able to drink fresh, clean water from the fountains, wash your hands in the sink and flush the toilet without a second thought.
But in Africa, and elsewhere in the developing world, things are very different. Many schools don’t have clean water, let alone sanitation facilities like toilets or latrines!
Without water and latrines, schools can become places that cause sickness for both students and teachers. Hundreds of millions of school-aged children suffer from water and sanitation related diseases and many become too sick to attend school. Dirty and unhygienic school environments discourage students from attending their classes, and the best teachers will not work at schools that do not offer these facilities.
Improving the water and sanitation situations at schools triggers a powerful ripple effect that positively impacts students on many levels—from facilitating their educational achievement to promoting better health, improving prospects of employment and ultimately escaping poverty.
You can help to transform lives, one school at a time!
